Mathis Airport, located in Suwanee, Georgia was established
nearly 50 years ago by the Mathis brothers. These two men did
the best they could with what resources they had at the time and
created what many pilots call today, a true barnstormers
airport. Old chicken coup hangars and a doglegged runway were the
basics of the original airport and were complemented by an old
cinder block building, weathered old porch swing, rusty gas pump
and civil war grave stones in the runway. In the summer of
1995, C.J. Mathis placed this property under contract with a
land developer. It was assumed that this historic landmark's
fate was sealed. As luck would have it, the plan fell through
and two pilots teamed up to rescue the the airport from it's
demise.
The vision for the airport was fairly simple, to create and
promote that small country airport atmosphere for recreational
pilots in the surrounding community. The vision included
providing a private, safe and educational environment for young
and old alike.
